Drawn by Barry Appleby
24 appearances (over 48 pages) from issue no. 1 (18/01/75) to no. 24 (28/06/75).
All were printed in black and white.
‘Janny’ being short for janitor. Branny is portrayed as the villain of the piece and always gets his come-uppance (on the second page of the strip in a frame much larger than the rest). Whether he is at fault is often six of one and half a dozen of the other, and sometimes, like King Lear, he is a “man more sinned against than sinning”. Actually, he’s more like Blakey from ‘On The Buses’.
Seems he wasn’t always bad tempered and hateful. At the beginning of the story in issue no 2 (see above) it is explained that when Branny first took the job “he had a natural love for little children (!), but thanks to little twits like Spotty Cyril [putting itching powder in his socks] he’s become the man we know today – a raving nutter who hates anyone under the age of 96!”. [The ‘What are you staring at?…’ speech bubble disappeared after issue no. 3]. Spotty Cyril reappeared in issue nos. 9, 12 and 13 (with an accomplice, Wilbur Wimpole), and in 16, 18, 21 and 22 with Sydney Snide (not be confused with Sydney Swotte, “the school brain”). Sydney Snide first appeared in issue no. 4.
Branny appeared in Curly's Commandos in issue nos. 14 and 16.
Sammy would appear at the top of the first page to introduce the strip and in one or two frames at the end to conclude the proceedings.
